How to Refer Patients to Clinical Sexologist, Kelley J. Wolfe, Ph.D.
As a Board Certified Clinical Sexologist,
Kelley helps the individual or couple find solutions to their sexual concerns
that are pleasurable, rewarding, and enhance their sexual experience.
How will patients benefit?
Kelley Wolfe is:
- highly trained in helping people recognize the many facets of sexual problems including how to address and overcome them.
- skilled in providing patients with accurate information, often dispelling social and cultural myths about sex and sexuality.
- committed to creating a safe space where healing can take place.
- familiar with a vast number of resources that can be recommended for problem solving and continued sexual growth.
How will my practice benefit?
- Patients report that receiving the proper referral is a value-added service.
- Physicians and healthcare providers do not have the time to talk extensively to the patient about sexuality; a sexologist does.
- Many sexual problems do not have biomedical origins, making successful medical treatment difficult, if not impossible. The modalities employed by Kelley are non-medical, patient-focused, and sex positive. Patients are asked to do assignments at home that contribute to their learning.
- Some physicians are uncomfortable initiating a conversation about sexuality because many medical schools do not train doctors in the area of sexuality. Knowing a sexologist that can be a referral source if the issue is non-medical can provide support to the physician and the patient.
When to refer
Any time sexuality education could contribute to sexual healing and growth. Sexuality education:
- helps a person better understand their sexuality and/or sexual concern,
- teaches non-medical techniques to address concerns and the sexual experience, and
- assists in the growth in a person’s intimate life.
Who to refer
Individuals and/or couples; heterosexual, homosexual, bisexuals, questioning, and transgender folk; men and women; young people (including youth and children) and old people. All are welcome.
Kelley does not see sex offenders.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a sex therapist and a sexologist?
As a sexologist, Kelley assesses people’s concerns specific to sexual problems and looks for ways that will allow them to enhance their sexuality. Working with a relationship counselor or sex therapist is beneficial when there are emotional or relationship issues. Kelley is NOT a therapist, counselor, psychologist or mental health care provider.
How long will a patient work with a sexologist?
Because work with a sexologist is more narrowly focused on sexual concerns rather than relationship concerns, it is usually short term and solution focused. However, different people progress at different rates. Work progresses rather quickly on a single issue if the client is consistent with sessions and assigned homework.
What is a private consultation session like?
After a phone conversation, consultation occurs in Kelley’s office at the Women’s Wellness and Education Center on Arlington Street, near downtown Asheville. During visits, patients learn accurate information about your specific concern(s) and receive “homework” to work on before our next appointment.
What is the cost of a consultation?
A 50-minutes session costs $95. Kelley offers a sliding scale and special rates for college students. Small group classes are also a good way to find help at a very affordable price.
